What is a Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge is a false tooth (or several teeth) commonly referred to in the dentistry world as a pontic. The pontic is merged between two porcelain crowns and ultimately fill in the area left by a missing tooth or teeth. The two crowns holding it in place are connected to your teeth on either side of the false tooth and this procedure is known as a fixed bridge. Fixed bridges can’t be taken out of your mouth like you might be able to do with a removable partial denture. This entire procedure is used to replace one or more missing teeth.
In an area like your front teeth – parts of your mouth that are under less stress - a cantilever bridge may be used. Cantilever bridges are used when only partial permanent teeth remain (there are teeth on only one side of the open space).
Bridges can diminish your risk of gum disease, help correct certain bite issues and even improve your speech. Bridges can last as long as a decade (or more) and demand that you take your oral hygiene quite seriously.
